Last couple days in the Wasatch

By June 23, 2013 No Comments

This is as close to home as I’ll get in the next month; a 2.5 hour layover in the Minneapolis airport! But that’s ok because I’m going from one awesome place to another; I’ve just left Park City and am en route to Stratton, where I’ll rejoin my club teammates that I haven’t seen in way too long!

Before I left Park City, I wanted to go on an adventure OD – a fun long workout that wasn’t directly related to roller skiing. So Cork and I hiked up Mount Timpanogos, the second highest peak in the Wasatch mountain range.

It was such a fun hike, and all the way up we kept seeing people coming back down, warning us that we wouldn’t make it because of snow and ice. So, naturally, I wanted to make the top even more. Turns out they weren’t kidding and there were pretty large snowfields up there in addition to the Timp Glacier that stays up there year-round, but we made it without any injuries.

The first part of the hike had beautiful waterfalls and so many plants overhanging the trail that I got pretty scratched up on the way down, but once we got halfway up we reached the lake and a relatively flat area that looked like a great camping spot.

Then we crossed a snowfield, slipping once in a while but eventually getting to the rocky part where we saw a huge white mountain goat! After taking a short break at the top, we wanted to get moving as it was pretty exposed, windy and cold. We ran along the ridgeline and had to do a little rock climbing when I led us down the wrong path 🙂

The glissading part was my favorite, and cut a lot of time on our way down, but was a little sketchy because the hot sun made it softer and stickier. Cork showed his running skills on the way down and actually dropped me! We were hauling all the way down and as a result my legs are pounded to a pulp today. But it was so worth it!

In other awesome news from PC, Sophie completed rookie camp, and is officially a “pro” on the USST! And Liz cooked us up a phenomenal traditional midsummer Swedish dinner. Yum!

I’m definitely going to miss the COE, though…we had so many awesome strength workouts there, and I’m also going to miss cooling down in the ramps and tramps room.
